I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life. ~Abraham Lincoln

Since we just celebrated Mother's Day, I wanted to do a special lesson about how a child is formed inside their mother. This lesson will be about how we start out as one cell and throughout the course of 9 months we become a baby.

Introducing the Human Cell

We all start our journey as a single cell that then multiplies to several cells to then form a baby. Each cell consists of several components that define who we are as a person. See the videos below to help explain to your kids what a cell is.

Spanish

Another interesting resource I found is a documentary currently on Netflix, from PBS, titled 9 Months That Made You. The first episode is an interesting video to show your class.

Hands on Learning

I wasn't able to find a cell model for the kids to use in class, so for my lesson I drew a picture of the cell & showed the kids each component of a cell. After teaching the class I have a suggestion to make this a better education experience for the kids. I looked up styrofoam human cell models on Pinterest & my recommendation is to make one & show it to the kids pointing out what is inside the cell & each components function.

Activity Time!

The activity for this week is just an introduction to what a cell is & the fact that a cell is eventually formed into a baby. For the actual cell coloring page you can tell the kids to color #1 in red, #2 in yellow, etc. so in the future they will see the color & automatically know what each component is. You can find these coloring pages on my Print Me! page, also for more resources check out Small Flock's Pinterest Board Organs of the Human Body.

**If you're interested in making this a biblical lesson you can use the verse found in Isaiah 44: 2-3. You can remind the kids that God is the one that created us & each one of us is special to him.
