"The things we truly love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as life remains."
― Josephine Baker

Our heart is a powerful muscle that works from the time we are formed in our mothers womb & then throughout the rest of our life, its a hard working organ! This week we will be learning about the components of our heart.
Introducing the Human Heart
There are several videos on Youtube about the human heart, but in my opinion these are the best ones for toddlers. The videos below not only show kids how their heart works & were the blood travels, but they also get the opportunity to feel their own heart beat!

Hands on Learning
To help kids further understand the human heart, we know hands on learning is one of the best methods. Check out Ein-O's Biosigns Human Anatomy Model - The Heart, this Anatomy Model shows where the blood travels & what the heart looks like on the inside.
You can also use the same an Anatomy Model that was used for the stomach lesson, Learning Resources® Human Body Anatomy Model, this is a great kit that will work for more than just teaching kids about organs. You can pull apart all of the other pieces to show kids how many layers it takes to get to the heart.
Another fun tool is a stethoscope! Kids can listen to their friends heart beat along with feeling their heart beat. All they have to do is a couple of jumping jacks that will get their blood pumping & heart beating! AllHeart has a good one on sale as of the date of this post, allheart Discount Single Head Stethoscope.
Activity Time!
You can find the activity for this week on my Print Me! page. This week there are two activity options! The first is a coloring activity to show kids where the blood travels. The second activity is a felt diagram that you can make with the kids, or have pre-cut to leave each kid to their own imagination to build the heart.
Felt Heart
To create the felt heart you will need these or similar items.
Red, blue, & tan (or brown, yellow, cream, black) felt sheets, these can be bought individually or in a package at your local Michaels store, I purchased Creatology™ Felt Sheet Pack. The number of sheets you need will depend on how many students you have.
Straight pins, can be found at any craft store.
Scissors
Heart template that can be found on my Print Me! page.

Now your ready to start!
First you'll need to pin the templates to it's corresponding color.

Then cut out each piece, I used a combination of scissors & a rotary cutter with a self healing mat. I cut out a lot of pieces!!

Finally, remove all straight pins & this is how the finished product will look after you've stacked them all together.

Yay!! A nice simple heart, your students will get the message. You can add velcro to the back of the shapes if you want everything to stay in place. I put all of the pieces into a ziplock bag with the steps on how to assemble the heart. You can also find this template on my Print Me! page.

***If you're interested in making this a biblical lesson you can use Psalms 33:13-15. A good topic would be that God looks at our heart & not our outward appearance.
